East Durham College would like congratulate floristry student William Gardner, who last week won through to the Barclays Money Skills Competition National Final 2011.

William, aged 22 from Richmond, travelled down to the regional finals at Thomas Danby College in Leeds along with two other regional finalists from East Durham College Nathan Harbottle and Lauren Hill.

William won his regional heat and was presented with his award by MP and Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls and will now travel down to Barclays HQ in Canary Wharf on 1st July for the national final.

His place at the national final follows his and 10,000s of students across the UK taking part in Barclays Money Skills week back in April. The week saw more than 1,000 students at East Durham College alone work on building their financial knowledge, skills and confidence.

As part of the week students were asked to come up with money saving tips for three categories: students, college and the country. It was William’s idea for students to put loose change into a tin they can’t open and when it’s full transfer the money into a savings account that has won him a place in the national final.

Barclays and the National Skills Academy for Financial Services run the project aimed at helping to strengthen the money management skills of over 90,000 students nationwide.
