Students Get Busy Making Cash Grow

Over 50 college students and staff have entered into a local fundraising challenge.

East Durham College has entered 16 teams into this year’s Evolution Challenge from departments such as Animal Care and Creative Arts & Media.

Evolution LLP, a North East based accountancy, business advisory and taxation practice, provide each team with £50 and the challenge is for them to then raise as much money as possible from the £50 over a period of three months, from 1 April to 30 June. The only rule is that it must be done ethically and legally and at least double the money.

Animal Care Lecturer Ian Hall said: “It’s getting really competitive between the students and staff teams, let alone the overall challenge.

“Various events and ideas are planned such as a sponsored dog walk from Peterlee to Houghall, a sponsored tractor pull, a Bungee Run competition, raffles and cake sales. One team has already raised £375 at a bingo event.”

There is then a special Awards Ceremony on 19th July 2011 at Wynyard Hall when prizes will be present for the team who raised the most money and the most innovative idea.

All of the money raised is donated to Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice, Hartlepool & District Hospice and St Teresa’s Hospice to help them in their efforts to achieve difficult fund targets. Last year’s challenge raised nearly £34,000.
