Students on courses at East Durham College’s Technical Academy have spent time looking behind the scenes with a leading construction company.
Level 3 electrical engineering students were welcomed onto a Miller Construction sites at the weekend as the leading contractor opened its doors to members of the public keen to learn about modern construction operations and career opportunities.
Miller’s site at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, took part in the national Open Doors Weekend initiative which provides members of the public a unique opportunity to have a look behind the hoardings at major construction sites across the country.
During the weekend visitors to the site were given a presentation on the construction operations and a guided tour of the site where specific careers and activities were explained by the site team.
Feedback from the events so far has been extremely positive. Gary Cook, Lecturer at East Durham College, who accompanied a party of Level 3 electrical engineering students to Miller’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital Emergency Care Centre said: “My students found the visit excellent as most have not seen a building site before.
“Comments from them have included how organised, clean and tidy the site looked, and how big the areas are for the electricians to fit out.
“Thanks to Miller Construction for opening my students’ eyes and making them even more determined to gain employment in their chosen fields.”
Chris Webster, Chief Executive, Miller Construction, said: “The Open Doors Weekend has been a great success again this year and we were delighted to welcome so many visitors to our sites.
“It was very encouraging to see so many young people getting involved and we hope that they now feel inspired to pursue a career in construction.”
Open Doors is organised by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), the Scottish Contractors Group (SCG), the Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council, CITB, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Considerate Constructors Scheme. Miller Construction was one of over 23 employers taking part in the Open Doors Weekend on 75 sites across England, Scotland and Wales.
