A group of talented students at East Durham College have pulled together to meet an usual brief from a client very close to home.

Painting and decorating students based at the College’s Peterlee Campus were tasked by the College’s marketing director to create a carnival style cut-out display ahead of this year’s Houghall Spring Show.

The students came up with a fun idea, linking to the arboriculture courses at the College’s land based Houghall Campus in Durham, before spending time carefully painting their design onto the structure.

The cut-out will be used as a fun photo opportunity for visitors at this year’s Houghall Spring Fayre, which takes place on Sunday 18th May, 10am-4pm.

East Durham College marketing director Alistair Cummins-Macleod created the brief after seeing a number of impressive wall murals created by the students as part of their course.

He said: “I decided to ask the painting and decorating department if they could create a carnival style cut-out after a family trip to Warwick Castle and seeing the success of a Horrible History cut-out there.

“I’d seen the quality of the wall murals the students produce and knew they’d be able to create something really impressive, and fun, for us to use at our Spring Show, and I wasn’t disappointed.”

The students’ lecturer Adrian Otty added: “It was great to be able to give the students a real life client brief, that’s exactly what they will receive when they start working for real so it was great experience for them.

“We train our students in all aspects of painting and decorating, and wall murals are an important part of that training as they offer painting and decorators access to a growing and quite lucrative market.”
