Coaches from all sports and levels gathered at East Durham Colleges’ Peterlee Campus to take part in the County Durham Sport Coaches Conference. This was the first major conference event to take place at the new £36 million build in Peterlee and definitely won’t be the last!
The event, which took place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of July, gave coaches the opportunity to take part in practical and theory workshops, such as, managing challenging behaviour, strength and conditioning and fitness testing. But the highlights of the weekend had to be a keynote speech by the renowned coach Dr Frank Dick OBE and the Q&A session, hosted by Jeff Brown from BBC Look North, where Geoff Cook of Durham County Cricket Club, Fab Flournoy of Newcastle Eagles and John Herdman of New Zealand Women’s Football Team shared their experiences as coaches. These coaches then led practical master classes, where coaches attending the conference benefitted from seeing them deliver a coaching session first-hand.
The delegates took full advantage of the brand new state-of-the-art facilities at East Durham College including the sports hall, which boasts 500 seats, the 220 seat theatre, outdoor playing fields, huge atrium area, meeting rooms and catering services. Catherine Watson, of County Durham Sport said, “This is a great facility, we couldn’t have done this just anywhere, it was a huge success!”
