Super Mum Wins Award

Louise Usher, a mature student from Peterlee, was recently presented with the Student Award for Sport for June.

Louise will soon complete a 2-year Foundation Degree in Sport, which she has been studying at East Durham College, and will then be going on to the one year top up at the University of Sunderland in order to get the full BSc Sports Degree.

Chris English, Sports Studies Lecturer, said: “All members of the sports team agreed that Louise is a very worthy candidate and winner for this award. Her performance has exceeded all expectations and if Louise continues at this level on the top up third year at Sunderland she is on course to achieve a First Class Honours Degree.

Louise’s efforts on the full time course are all the more remarkable as she is mum to 5 sons; John, James, Graeme, George and Ethan, who are aged from 7 to 24 – plus George, 12, has Asperger syndrome.

Louise was working as a teaching assistant at Shotton Hall in Peterlee when she decided she wanted to go back to college and get the qualifications to become a PE teacher.

Louise, aged 41, said: “I’m really proud to have won this award and am loving the course. Once I get my degree I plan to try and get a job as a PE teacher in the area, as I don’t want to move far as that would be too disruptive for the family and particularly George.”
