Healthy cupcakes came out on top in the battle of the business ideas last week.

Two teams of students from the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at East Durham College went head-to-head last week in The Apprentice style task with a pop-up shop at the Dalton Park Shopping Outlet.

The teams had to come up with different ideas on what product to sell with one group, Sugar Coated, selling healthy cupcakes going up against XYXY who were selling handbags created from recycled clothes.

Sugar Coated came out on top amassing a profit of £230 from the sales of their cakes.

The money raised from the sale of all the products is the start of the groups fundraising drive as they start to raise money to get to the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy end of year awards event in London in July.

East Durham College Peter Jones Enterprise lecturer Jill Campbell hailed the exercise a huge success and believes the task was a great experience for all the students involved.

Jill said: “This was a fantastic opportunity offered to us through the space at Dalton Park and the task really gave the students the experience of creating a product and brand, setting up a store front and making sales.

“All the students worked really hard on the task and hopefully they will remember this experience throughout their time in the business sector.

“Also the profit raised through the task is a fantastic start to the fundraising that they are about to begin over the next few weeks.

“I’d like to thank Dalton Park on behalf of the College and students for their very kind support in this event.”
