East Durham College student Abbie Nelson said she was “delighted” to recently win the Animal Care Award at the College’s February 2011 Student of the Month Awards ceremony.
Abbie, who is 16 and from Darlington, started at the College’s Houghall Campus in September after finishing her GCSEs at Eastbourne Comprehensive School - now known as St. Aiden’s Academy.
At the awards presentation held on Monday, Animal Care Lecturer Chloe Gosling said: “Abbie started the year as quite a shy member of the class but has really developed her skills and come out of her shell to become one of the main contributors in a variety of class discussions and activities.
“She is an excellent team player in both practical and theory subjects and is up to date with all her assignments, completing them to a distinction standard.
“We have also been impressed with her ability and willingness to help less-experienced members of the class in practical sessions, particularly with the horses.”
Abbie, who hopes to become an Animal Care Lecturer or Animal Welfare Officer, added: “I’m loving the course and working with all the different animals we have at the College. I’m also really looking forward to starting my work placement in March when I will be helping with lambing at a farm in Wolsingham, Weardale.”
