Students from East Durham College’s Hair and Beauty department have travelled to Blackpool to compete in a national competition, coming home with some fantastic results.

The team travelled to the iconic Winter Gardens to compete in the finals of Association of Hair and Therapy (AHT) national competition.

The team already started the year with a fantastic performance at the AHT regional competition in Gateshead last month, where they picked up the Best Overall College prize for the third time in four years, along with five individual first place finishes.

And the group have continued their great start to 2014 in Blackpool with a number of fantastic places against competitors from all over England and Scotland.

Donna Slater, 23, from Peterlee, took first place in the Men’s Alternative Category, Shannon Ferguson, 18, from Horden, and Orianne Million, 18, from Sedgefield, took first and second respectively in the Creative Design Category, and Johann Sabou, 32, from Gateshead, placed third in the ladies Afro-Caribbean competition.

There was also a very credible third place finish in the highly competitive team event. Sean Robinson, 18, from Horden, Courtney Williams, 17, from Easington, Lisa Stoker, 31, from Peterlee, Laura Jobson, 28, from Peterlee, and Zoe Fannan, 17, from Peterlee, made up the group who had to work on hair, make-up and costumes for a choreographed performance themed on fashion and styling from the past 50 years.

Julie Williams, East Durham College hair and beauty lecturer, praised the fantastic performance by the students and is really proud by their achievements over the two days of hard fought competition.

Julie said: “We have had a fantastic couple of days at Blackpool, all the competitors put in fantastic performances and we had some great results.

“We had some amazing results once again at the regionals in Gateshead earlier in the year, but to come out and perform to this standard against competitors from across the country has been brilliant. I’m so proud of all the students who took part.”
