A college in Durham is inviting talented rugby union and football players to attend trials to join their prestigious sport scholarship programme.
The trails will be held by East Durham College at their Houghall Campus, in Durham, and are open to boys who will be aged 16 or 17 on or before 1st September (current Year 11 and 12 students).
The football trails will be held on Wednesday 4th April and the rugby trials on Wednesday 11th April. Registration is at 9.45am on both days.
The potential stars of the future will be in with a chance of gaining a place at the College’s unique Durham Academy of Sport on their Elite Athlete Scholarship Programme.
The scholarship programme, which sees students based at the Houghall Campus, offers an attractive package of incentives and support - along with expert coaching and guidance from the Academy’s top coaching team of ex-professionals.
Successful scholarship winners will receive free training kit, a free laptop, assistance with travel expenses and a range of other bonuses and support.
On the academic side students will be enrolled on to a Level 3 BTEC in Sport Studies, which if they successfully complete the two year programme is the equivalent to three A Levels. Scholars will also gain sports coaching or officiating awards.
Head of the Scholarship Programme Liam Gumbrill explained: “We created the scholarship last year and it attracted, and rewarded, some of the best young talent in the region.
“In fact, two of this year’s rugby scholars have recently captained the England Colleges RFU team during a tour of Portugal. Plus a number other others have represented county and region.”
There are only 20 places available for football and 20 for rugby. To be eligible to apply you must be aged 16 or 17 on or before 1st September. You should be county standard or above; selection is via a trial. You will also need to have/get four GCSEs at grade C or above.
