East Durham College were delighted with their exceptional performance at the prestigious AHT (The Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) Annual National Finals, held at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens on Sunday 21st and Monday 22nd March.
Following a great performance at the north east regional qualifiers, held earlier in the month in Gateshead, the College took 27 students to compete against the hundreds of other students from over 50 colleges from across England, Scotland and Wales.
The team achieved three top place finishes for the first time since they started to compete at the AHT Finals.
Alison Langley, 42 from Peterlee, got the ball rolling on Sunday winning the Barbering Patterns (Level 3).
Then two further wins followed on the Monday with William Lewis, 19 from Peterlee, winning the Men’s Alternative (Level 3) category and Thomas Middleton, 15 from Seaham, in the Young Fashionable Day Style category - making it three fantastic wins.
Laura Hudson, 17 also from Seaham, came a highly commended third in the Mannequin Ladies Long Hair with Ornamentation category to round off an exceptional performance for the College.
Simon Smith, Curriculum Leader for Hair & Beauty, was delighted with the team’s performance, and said: “The fact we managed to win three categories at these highly competitive finals is a testament to the extraordinary hard work of the students and staff.
“Competitions can be a big part of a student’s future career in the hair and beauty industry, so experiences like
this are vital to the development and confidence of the students.
“I’m absolutely thrilled with the way the whole team performed and of course the tremendous success of the winners. The whole team were bouncing with excitement on the coach home!”
William Lewis, who added to his previous first and second at the AHT Finals, said: “I thought I was in with a good shout as I felt my style was original and quite avant-garde but it was still a shock to win. It’s always great to compete at the finals, I loved it.”
