Vocational Skills Awards Event Has The X Factor

Aiden Grimshaw, of X Factor fame, was in the region last night to perform and present the awards at the annual East Durham Vocational Skills Awards 2011.
The awards event was held at East Durham College’s Peterlee Campus and attended by over 250 people including the 77 award winners, their families, teaching staff from local schools, the College Governors and the Mayors of Peterlee and Seaham.
The awards were for Year 10 and Year 11 Peterlee school pupils who had excelled in a wide range vocational learning categories from Photography to Horticulture, from Retail to Music.
St. Bede’s Catholic Comprehensive School, Dene Community School of Technology, Easington Community Science School, Shotton Hall School and Wellfield Community Schools a Specialist Maths and Computing College were all represented by award winners.
The Student of the Year award winner was announced on the night as Year 10 pupil Zoe Banks from Shotton Hall. Zoe, aged 15 and from Peterlee, also won the Year 10 Performing Arts Award category.
“I can’t believe it, it’s brill. And Aiden was amazing, what a voice, I’ve had an unbelievable night” she said.
Zoe followed in her sister’s footsteps, Kerry Banks, who amazingly won student of the year at the first ever VS Awards over 7 year ago.
College Principal Stuart Wesselby commented: “It was an absolute privilege for the College to once again host these awards and recognise the fantastic achievements of so many young learners.
“With commitment and effort I’m sure all the winners with be successful in the next phase of their lives.”
