Vote For Jayde

A local college student has been short listed from over 2,000 entries in a competition run by a specialist further education newspaper.

Jayde Kirkup, who is 16 and from Peterlee, entered a competition run by FE Week newspaper in partnership with qualifications awarding body the NCFE - and is now in with a chance of winning a brand new MacBook Pro or £1,000 of John Lewis vouchers.

Students across the county were encouraged to enter the competition where they were asked to tell their stories of successfully progressing to college.

The health & social care student sent in her story shortly after starting at East Durham College in Peterlee in September.

FE Week set up the competition because they wanted to hear more about learners as they started their courses. FE Week asked learners to send in a 500-word article explaining what brought them to college, along with their hopes, fears and aspirations.

An FE Week spokesperson said: “We know that there are many reasons why learners come into FE (Further Education), and we know it’s not just about skills, knowledge and career opportunities.

“FE changes lives, and we wanted to share some of these amazing stories, and bring them to a wider audience.”

Jayde has already come in for praise from her college lecturers when we won a student of the month award in November.

Her lecturer Julie Knowles, said at the time: “Jayde has an amazingly positive outlook which works in her favour, as does her passion and enthusiasm for her course. Her effort and commitment have been all the more remarkable as she has Cerebral Palsy.

“Jayde works really well in group activities. She is a sociable, kind, hardworking young person who does everything in her power to not let her disability be a barrier to what she wants to achieve.

“She is an inspirational person who is a pleasure to teach.”

A spokesperson for the College added: “I hope the local community will support Jayde and get voting! But please hurry as you must cast your vote by Wednesday 1st February 2012. I’m sure Jayde will appreciate any local support.”
