Overview of the course: 

Looking to get your start in the engineering or welding industry? This introductory course programme is delivered part-time and gives you an insight into how MIG welding works, as well as developing your initial skills to produce a wide range of welds within a quality standard.

Entry requirements: 

There are no prior entry requirements for this course, it's open to all.

This course is particularly suited to those wanting an introduction to welding and is an ideal stepping-stone onto higher welding or engineering qualifications upon completion.

Note: Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.


The course will be delivered in a workshop setting with and will cover the practical aspects of welding including joint set up and how to determine and identify weld defects.

How is the course assessed?: 

The course is assessed by producing test samples of welds and testing them to ensure they meet the required standard.

Further study options after this course: 

Following successful completion of the course candidates may progress on to the Level 2 Engineering course or enter the Industry at an operator level.

Length of the course: 

10 Weeks at 6 hours/week (to start at intervals throughout the year)
